Mass Effect Drabble: Old Soldiers

“I am too young to feel this old,” Ashira muttered, accepting the glass of whiskey from Garrus. He poured himself some Turian brandy, reclining into the chair next to her. They were looking out over the presidium in the same spot they’d shot the bottles during the War.

“New candidates just keep pouring in huh?”

“I’m just glad there’s enough of us left to split up into specialized testing. Bau takes up sniping and infiltration, I put them through assault and demolition-“

“And Samara scares the hell out of them with biotic testing?”

Ashira shot him a wry look and his mandibles flared in a grin, “yes, actually.”

Garrus chuckled, drinking some of his brandy, “so how long before you suggest her joining the Spectres?”

She shook her head, “well done, detective Vakarian.”

He gave a half-assed bow from his relaxed position, “I do try.”

Ashira smirked, downing some of her whiskey, “not sure how I’ll word it.”

“Blunt truth isn’t cutting it?”

“I don’t know, I feel like I’ll be opening a floodgate.”

“Like things are going to escalate and get dangerous?”

“It’s a really stupid thought, I know she can take care of herself. I know that.”

Garrus was quiet a moment, mandibles pulled tightly against his jaw, “yeah, well we’ve seen a lot of good people go down before.”

Ashira tried to find a smile somewhere but couldn’t muster the energy, suddenly lacking it. She sighed and took a larger mouthful of her drink, “do you think about them, Garrus?”

His response was quiet but immediate, “every night.”

She forced a smile and reached over, patting his shoulder, “bet they’re cheering down at us.”

Garrus nodded, “can’t imagine what the reunion with Anderson and Udina looked like.”

A single breath escaped her throat, almost a laugh but failing as it passed her lips, “not friendly.”

He took another swig, his glass half empty now, “maybe Ashley was there to welcome him too.”

Ashira closed her eyes, leaning her head back and just listening to sky cars below, “that would’ve been funny.”

They both went quiet, Garrus watching the pretend sky and Ashira almost falling asleep. The glasses were refilled but few words were exchanged until the bottles were almost empty and the silent veil of stoicism crumbled.

Garrus idly waved his hand, poking Ashira’s shoulder when it wandered close enough to the woman, “now you, you were always so crazy. I stood there for half the missions thinking to myself ‘oh, so this is how I’m going to die.’ You do realize that right?”

Ashira grinned, eyes still shut, “yeah and I wondered how many times I could pull this shit off before someone mutinied.” She turned her head to look at him, “glad I had other crazy people with me.”

He chuckled, snorting a bit, “gotta be a bit crazy to run with the Shepard.”

She scoffed, “the Shepard. I sound like I should have a damn cape.”

“Why not? It’d make you look so stylish.”

“I could be space Batwoman.”

“I have no idea who that is, but that sounds perfect. You should really do that.”

“I’ll put it on my to-do-list. Maybe for Halloween?”

“Hallowha…?”

“Human holiday, we put costumes on and hunt for candy.”

“Why are you all so weird?”

“I dunno, why do you have a scaly face.”

“Because you had to have those creepy stringy things on your head.”

“My stringy things are amazing.”

They broke out in a fit of giggles, hardly noticing the approaching footsteps.

“You two are hopeless,” Liara spoke under her breath, smiling and watching the pair laugh in a drunken haze. She’d leave them a little longer before she coaxed them into the car so she could take them home.

  • It's not even that I'm offended by mature artwork, people can draw it if they want to, hell I sometimes actually approve. But it's just seeing Samara as such a regal, classy lady and then I see...things. And I'm just sitting there with the most conflicted look on my face all:

  • "This just seems so disrespectful..."

  • Maybe I'm just weird. But the knee jerk reaction happens all the same.

I always wonder how weird this scene was for Shepard. Was it scary? Terrifying even? To be walking out in space again just a year or so after getting spaced? Trippy stuff.

Last time I played this I assumed that, although acting all “Shepard got dis”, she’s actually trying really hard to keep a lid on her internal freakout. And because she’s Commander Shepard she’s able to.

I like to imagine she’s got the emotional fortitude of a stoned monastic elcor, so that when her exhaustion, anger, and sadness show through you know she’s really struggling with it. It’s not that she doesn’t feel, it’s that she’s able to do what she does in spite of it. She’s an example of acceptance and commitment training in action.

Reblogging for commentary because THIS IS PERFECT.

I had these exact thoughts, especially when the rest of the walkway breaks away and she nearly floats off. Just “heart jumps into throat and sets up shop there for a moment.”

I side with the Geth every time. the Quarians started this war with the Geth all on their own, and when I gave them a chance to back down and live equally with this other race they were blinded by power and revenge. they killed themselves, and I’m ashamed at Tali for not realizing this.”

http://masseffect3confessions.tumblr.com/

So, I reblogged this with my other blog, but I’ll do it again here: The person that made this confession must not have listened to the dialogue very well.

-Han’Gerrel started the hostilities. Which put the quarians in a very awkward position—because with the actual military punch aimed at the geth, the geth are going to fight back. And there go peace talk ideas

-Tali mentions she misses Legion at one point. She also mentions not wanting to do this. At all. The other Admirals (Koris most vocally) point out that they’re now stuck in a suicide run, because what geth would believe offers of peace? Especially with Legion out of the picture until Shepard saves him/it, the quarians—because of one faction—are now screwed.

-See above for the theme of over half of the Priority:Rannoch missions.

-Dorn’Hazt even mentions the civilians on the Fleet didn’t want war.

People—why you no actually play game before making statements like this? Of course, there is the very strange 360 Tali did with the Reaper codes, but I’m chalking that up to the largely lackluster writing present in ME3. Up until then, she was all in for rescuing Koris and trying to not go any farther down the species-wide suicide path. In fact, Bioware makes it quite clear only one section of the quarian population want to go to war (see Dorn’Hazt…). *sigh*

I find it amusing that this person claims that the confessor didn’t listen to the dialogue, when they appear to have completely ignored the lore around quarians. I understand where this person is coming from, but there is a severe problem with this argument; the quarians are all about ‘for the whole’ and if it doesn’t benefit the whole, then it doesn’t happen. And if a majority of the quarian race did not want this, then the other Admirals would have overruled Gerrel and the attack would never have happened. And if Gerrel had continued to attack regardless, he would have been branded a traitor, exiled, and left to his fate.

One quarian can’t make the quarian race go to war in the same way one quarian couldn’t make them not go to war. It is said, in game, that the only Admirals that rejected the idea of going to war were Tali and Koris, meaning that Xen, Gerrel and Raan were all supportive of the idea. Also, if the quarian race was so against the war, the Conclave could have decided simply not to go. The only way the Admirals could have had their war was if they overruled the order of the Conclave, in which case the entire Admiralty Board would immediately have to resign, as is stated in-game. The new Admirals could simply choose not to go to war. But no. The Admirals wanted to go, and everyone followed blindly. I mean, even Tali didn’t seem to put up more than a token protest. Shouldn’t she, at least, have gone ‘SHEPARD! COME SORT THIS SHIT OUT BEFORE WE DIE?!’ And Koris is in charge of the liveships, and he let Gerrel arm them. The entire quarian race, at this point, is full of morons. And yes, I am even talking about Tali, at this point, who even though she has come leaps and bounds, decided to remain silent and let the quarians throw themselves into war instead of taking a stand, in case it divided the fleet. And even if, somehow, this could be validated, the entire point is rendered moot when you consider the fact that the galaxy is at war with the Reapers, and they think now is a good time to pick a fight with the geth, you diots.

The bottom line is that the quarian people either chose their ancient hatred toward the geth, or chose to be silent in their objection to the war, which caused Gerrel to strike so hard and so brutally against the geth that the geth turned to the Reapers for aid, which is the one thing that the geth would never normally do, considering they want to find their own way. In the end, the quarians chose, and the get did not. And not only that. My Shepard did everything in her power to get them to safety, and THEY STILL ATTACKED. When she was ON THE DREADNOUGHT. Now I don’t know about you guys, but when some idiot puts my crew members (and LI) in jeopardy, Shepard goes a little bonkers!

And, the final reason why I did a massive facepalm at what the quarians had done? Because all it would have taken was for them to look Gerrel in the face and say ‘no’. But they didn’t. One quarian, with his selfish ideals, led them into death, and they let him.

I never get why Morinth looks exactly like Samara, but then Rila and Falere just look like normal asari.

Because that would’ve been effort? I have no idea either, but it bugs me enough to think about it.

My current rationalization is that while Morinth really took after her mother, Rila and Falere took after their father more.

My mother looks like the double image of her own mother, but her sister doesn’t.

  • Me:

Samara is a classy, elegant lady. A romance with her would have to be really tasteful.

  • Fan:

Oh totally, but we know she used to have a wild life, tasteful doesn't have to mean cold.

  • Me:

Of course, but it's a fine line to make it erotic but still tasteful. You can get it wrong really easily.

  • Fan:

Yeah and that's just without getting Samara's writing wrong in the first place.

    Indeed.

…I really didn’t expect to cry like I did. Dammit.

Fanmade ME3 Ending (they custom-animated a good half of it) and it’s pretty heartbreaking. Whole time I imagined Garrus in Liara’s place and…. well - you get the idea. ;__; Waatcch. It’s beautifully made - and very touching.

BRB. SOBBING.

This is the best ending headcanon I have seen yet and I am now adopting it because it’s just beautifully simple.

FEELINGS

Close to Home: Update 2.0

Because WAAAAH my gut has been feeling crappy the last few days so I haven’t written much. But here, have some Shepard and Samara friendly sparring:

“So Areveth was fine?” Ashira spoke as if they were settled at the couch, relaxed, instead of sparring in the middle of the apartment. There was plenty of room to do so without hitting anything and the carpet was thick enough to make falling less painful.

“She performed very well; I can see why she survived the Admiral’s missions.” Samara deftly stepped out of the way when Ashira’s arm extended in a grab for her wrist, brushing it aside and lifted her leg to strike the Spectre’s side.

Ashira quickly jumped back, avoiding it; she quirked a brow. “Oh?”

The Asari tilted her head, “she is creative and resourceful, with another century and Spectre training she will be an excellent biotic.”

Ashira gave a mildly bemused look, “you know I still can’t wrap my head around the time needed.”

A subtle smile tilted Samara’s lips, “that is expected.”

I can't believe nothing came of the attempted-romance...

I know right? They said there would be continuation and resolution.

  • Me:

One indirect line change that needs to be pointed out because it's so subtle is neither of those things.

  • Fan:

We should totally make our voices heard in the next LI Tribute, maybe Bioware will take notice?

    Great idea! :D

  • A Wild Stranger Appears!

  • Stranger:

You guys totally don't understand Samara's character if you want a romance with her.

  • Me:

And what gives you the superior understanding of her character to tell us ours is flawed?

  • -Silence-

  • Me:

    ._.

  • Later, in another thread!

  • Fan:

So what do you guys think should be done with the romance?

  • Me:

Maybe have Shepard express their feelings again, gently, and start from there? I mean there was mutual attraction before, that was very obvious.

  • Fan:

"I believe I could find more than happiness with you" right?

  • Me:

    Exactly.

  • Fan:

It'd have to be tasteful and respectful to the character, naturally.

  • A Wild Stranger Appears!

  • Stranger:

I don't think people who want a romance with Samara grasped her character...
